Yes, Zombies Need Brains!

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

Every year, Joshua Palmatier holds a kickstarter for his SF&F anthologies from Zombies Need Brains, his imprint. This year, times are tough and things are running a bit behind, pledge-wise. Please check out his Kickstarter page to see if there is anything that sparks an interest. There are lots of perks for pledging!

Here's a little bit about the project:

This project will fund THREE science fiction and fantasy anthologies, titled WERE-2, SKULL X BONES, and AMPYRIUM: MERCHANT WAR. Each anthology will contain approximately 14 all-original (no reprint) short stories from established SF&F authors in the field and new voices found through an open call. The books will be edited by S.C. Butler & Joshua Palmatier (WERE-2), David B. Coe & Joshua Palmatier (SKULL X BONES), and Joshua Palmatier (AMPYRIUM: MERCHANT WAR).

WERE-2:

It’s the night of the full moon, but there are more than mere werewolves skulking the streets. In WERE-2, we return to the back alleys in the dead of night to discover what other were-creatures might see you as prey. A were-raven? Were-squirrel? Were-octopus? You won’t know until you hear that rustle of feathers next to your ear or smell the brine of the sea in that gust from the window. Writers are asked to give us their most creative were-creature, with only one rule: No werewolves allowed!

Edited by S.C. Butler & Joshua Palmatier, WERE-2 will contain approximately fourteen stories with an average length of 6,000 words each. Anchor authors include:

    • Randee Dawn,
    • Auston Habershaw,
    • Gini Koch,
    • Gail Z. Martin & Larry N. Martin,
    • Harry Turtledove,
    • Tim Waggoner, and
    • Jean Marie Ward.

SKULL X BONES:

Avast, ye scurvy dogs! It’s time to plunder! Pirates have enchanted and haunted readers for generations, from Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island to the ill-fated Firefly. Whether it’s Blackbeard, Mal, or Han Solo, we love our swashbucklers, our One-Eyed Willies, and our scruffy-looking nerfherders. In SKULL X BONES, we want writers to give us their best science fiction or fantasy pirates, whether they be on the sailing ships of the deep wide ocean or the spaceships of the black void!

Edited by David B. Coe & Joshua Palmatier, SKULL X BONES will contain approximately fourteen stories with an average length of 6,000 words each. Anchor authors include:

    • R.S. Belcher,
    • Alex Bledsoe,
    • Jennifer Brozek,
    • C.C. Finlay,
    • Violette Malan,
    • Misty Massey, and
    • Alan Smale.

AMPYRIUM: MERCHANT WAR:

The city of Ampyrium is bustling with trade…in the midst of a Merchant War! In AMPYRIUM: MERCHANT WAR, we return to the city that’s the hub for eight portals to other worlds, where the streets are shadowed on the brightest of days, the wares exchange hands both above and beneath the table, and all of it happens under the Eyes of the enigmatic Magnum. In AMPYRIUM: MERCHANT WAR, we invite writers to come play in this shared-world city of magic and mayhem, saintliness and sin, established by the seven authors in last year’s AMPYRIUM. What nefarious plans will you perpetrate…or foil?

Edited by Joshua Palmatier, AMPYRIUM: MERCHANT WAR will contain approximately fourteen stories with an average length of 6,000 words each. Anchor authors include:

    • Patricia Bray,
    • S.C. Butler,
    • David B. Coe,
    • Esther M. Friesner,
    • Juliet E. McKenna,
    • Jason Palmatier, and
    • Joshua Palmatier.

Backers of this project will essentially be generating the base funds needed to produce these three anthologies—including payment for the contributing authors, payment for the cover artist, production costs for producing the anthology, etc. There will be a special mass market Kickstarter edition produced for backers who help fund the project at the paperback level. This special edition will have a limited print run to cover the orders made by the backers and will not be printed again after the Kickstarter print run. After that, there will be a trade paperback edition issued to the general public that will have an unlimited print run. So get in on the Kickstarter now and get the special mass market Kickstarter edition!

I see Joshua every year at the annual Shore Leave convention. He also attends other conventions when he can. He is always willing to talk about writing and help other budding authors. Here is a chance to return the favor!

Mid-Week Flash Challenge - Week 72

Just a quick announcement before my blog begins...

Please consider donating to the Zombies Need Brains Sci-fi/fantasy anthologies Kickstarter! There will be three books! Lots of perks and, if funded, there will be an open submission! If you're a writer, that's a good thing! You can reach the Kickstarter by clicking HERE.

* * *

Everyone likes a little flash fiction, right? Thanks to a photo prompt from Miranda Kate's 72nd Mid-Week Flash challengeyou're going to get some! This is from Miranda's post:

This photo was taken by Flemming Beier, a Danish Photographer. He won't say where exactly this was taken, just that it was in Denmark. He has lots of interesting photos on his page at 500px.

Here is a link to the photo prompt for this week's challenge.

If you want to join in, here's what she's looking for:
General Guidelines:

Story length: Anything up to 750 Words (no minimum).
How enter: Either provide a link in the comments, or post the entire story in the comments.
Deadline: I will post a new one every Wednesday, but if you're inspired by a previous weeks, go ahead and write for it.
Genre/Theme: All/Any - completely open. It doesn't even have to refer to the picture.

I have two stories this time, both a bit dark. They could be considered as parts of one long story or two separate ones. The choice is yours. The first, The New Tenant, has 679 words. The second, The Face of Henri Martel, has 737. They both end with a surprise for the main character, and with the word "now." Let me know if you have a favorite!

The New Tenant

"We won't get into trouble coming here, will we? I don't want to be arrested for trespassing."

"I don't believe that will be a problem. No one comes here anymore, not since the floods. That's why the house was abandoned."

The path to what remained of the wooden cottage wound through a small glade not far off the unpaved road. Once the structure came into full view, Maurice noticed his friend's eyes scanning every rotten eave, broken post, and dangling shutter.

"Why do you do this, Henri, when you have a beautiful woman at home who needs your attention? To me, it hardly seems worthwhile. You work all day making next to nothing, then waste your spare time painting—well, this sort of thing. "

"It's difficult to explain. I know Julia doesn't understand. Most people don't. Burning the candle at both ends has certainly taken a toll on me and my marriage. But I have to. Painting is in my blood, Maurice. I can't help myself. And with the right subject, I know my art will finally begin to sell. Perhaps I'll even become famous. Then I can treat her as she deserves."

Henry paced around the house, carefully stepping on the high spots in the clearing. He held up his hands to frame a scene, then went little farther and repeated his actions. Finally, he backed away to where he could view the house and grounds in its entirety.

"You asked if I knew of an old house, one with character and interesting lines," said Maurice. "Is this what you were looking for?"

"It's absolutely perfect. The house, the light through the trees, everything. I appreciate all you've done to help me, Maurice."

"Not at all, Henri. Not at all."

Both were startled by a sound from within the decaying structure.

"What was that? I heard a noise, but I didn't see anything."

"What was it?" Maurice laughed at Henry's obvious discomfort. "A ghost? The wandering spirit of a past owner? Come now, Henry. You can't possibly believe in such things! Most likely a small animal scurrying about—or a loose roofing tile that fell. Nothing more."

Henri returned a nervous smile then looked back at the house. As he did, he gasped, his eyes opening wide.

A strong hand on Henri's shoulder held him still while a bloody blade was extracted from between his ribs. Still standing, a forceful boot directed his dying body into a deep, stagnant pool. Red ribbons swirled in the water. Chunks of brick and fallen branches were tossed on top of the unfortunate man to secure his place beneath the surface. Eventually, the rising bubbles ceased and the glade was silent.

Maurice was rinsing the knife in a puddle as a car approached, slowly bobbing and dipping over the bumps on the overgrown dirt road that passed one side of the property. It pulled up behind his own vehicle. He heard the engine shut off. He threw the knife as far as he could into the brush. The car door opened. A tall, slender figure got out as he hurried to remove his bloodied shirt.

"Hello, Julia."

"Everything went as planned?"

"Yes. Perfectly."

"I wish I could say the same. I passed the entrance to this stupid road, if you can call it that, three times before I saw it. Your clean clothes are in the trunk. I'll find a place to dispose of those soiled ones. You don't look good in red, anyway."

Maurice stuffed his stained clothing into a bag. "I told you this place would work. No one will ever find him."

She handed him a large business envelope. "This has everything you'll need—your passport and money—until we meet up in Switzerland." She glanced at the house in disgust, the overgrown trees and swamp providing an unpleasant atmosphere in the fading light. "Let's get out of here. This place is ghastly. If ever a house was haunted, this is it."

Maurice looked back at the old cottage and grinned. "You know, that is entirely possible—now."

The Face of Henri Martel

"Monsieur? I am Detective Cloutier. This is Dr. Joubert. She is here to assist in this interview. We would like to discuss your relationship with one Henri Martel."

The man seated across the table gave no reaction, sitting motionless with a blank stare.

"Monsieur?"

For a moment, the man gave no response, then looked directly into the detective's eyes. "I killed him."

"Do you understand you are confessing to the murder of Henri Martel?"

"Without Julia there is nothing left for me. Why shouldn't I confess?"

"To be clear, you are referring to Julia Martel, the wife of the deceased?"

The answer came slowly. "Yes."

"I must warn you that what you tell us may be used as evidence."

The man shrugged. "May I ask what happened—to Julia?"

"Madame Martel had stopped at a trash bin near a factory close to the border. A night watchman at the entrance heard a shriek. When he investigated, he found her holding a bloodied shirt and screaming incoherently. She has nothing intelligible since that time except your name—Maurice. We also found minute traces of blood beneath your fingernails. I am certain we will determine it is that of Henri Martel. Because of these things, I believe the shirt belongs to you."

"I don't understand why a shirt would have that affect, even a bloodied shirt."

"It was not the shirt, per se, monsieur. It was the image on the shirt. An image formed in blood. The blood of Henri Martel. I have with me a photograph of the shirt." The detective pushed the picture across the table and in front of Maurice. "Tell me, monsieur, you knew this man well. Is it a good likeness?"

The color drained from Maurice's face. Staring back at him were another set of eyes, eyes set within a familiar face, the face of Henri Martel. It was a forlorn, pained image, a desperate visage, as if pleading to understand.

Maurice's head bowed. "This is what I have done. No one else is to blame."

"Will you sign a confession to that effect?"

"Yes," Maurice whispered.

"With the evidence and the confession, there is little left for me to do here from a criminal standpoint. Dr. Joubert, however, would like to ask some additional questions to evaluate your condition."

Maurice grinned. "Evaluate my condition? You mean my mental state. She is here to determine if I am mad, a lunatic."

"I'm a doctor, Maurice. Regardless of your involvement is in this matter, I am here to help you."

"What would help me most is Julia. Tell me, doctor, will she recover?"

"Eventually, perhaps, with proper therapy."

"May I see her?"

"I don't think that would be advisable. Not at this time."

Maurice nodded. "I see."

"Can you tell me more about the circumstances during the time when Henri Martel was killed. Was there a fight, an argument? Did passions flair?"

"There was no fight in Henri. He wouldn't hurt a fly." Maurice took a deep breath. "Passion? Yes, there was much passion, but for Henri it was only about his painting. Julia? She was very much different. They were married young, both probably a bit naive. The passion she saw in him as a young artist never transformed into a passion for her. I'm not sure Henri truly knew how to love a person. I believe he thought of Julia more in the way of an admirer than as a lover. As time passed, however, she wanted—needed—more. She grew to hate his indifference to her desires."

"And you stepped in to fill those needs."

Maurice did not respond.

"Did Julia ask you to kill him?"

"It does not matter," he replied, pounding his fist on the table. "I despised him. He had everything I wanted and didn't care. He was easy to kill."

"And what do you make of this?" She pointed to the photograph of the shirt.

"He told me he had painting in his blood. He was right. I didn't understand. This will be his final masterpiece, no? And he will get what he wanted—fame." Maurice sat silently as he stared at the image. "I had no idea he was this good." He looked up at Dr. Joubert. "No, I was not mad when I killed Henri." He pushed the picture aside and laughed. Then he laughed louder, the sound filling the tiny room. "But I am now."

Zombies Need Your Help

Zombies Need Brains, to be more specific.

Zombies Need Brains LLC logo

Joshua Palmatier has set up a Kickstarter to fund the creation of three new sci-fi / fantasy anthologies based on the following concepts:
  • PORTALS
  • TEMPORALLY DEACTIVATED
  • ALTERNATE PEACE
He's hoping to collect $25,000 to fund the printing, cover the cost of the cover art, and to pay the authors (at a SFWA professional rate - most important!). There will be about 14 stories in each anthology. Approximately half the authors are already chosen from people Joshua has worked with in the past, but if the Kickstarter is funded then there will be an open call for stories to fill them out. He is always eager to read from outside his pre-selected group and has mentioned that the best stories often come from unknown or lesser-known authors.

Joshua has a track record for creating these anthologies, so don't be concerned about the   disappear with the money. He has done this for several years now, and the books have done quite well. I've already contributed for this project, and I contributed to the last round of anthologies, too. And maybe I'll have time to write a suitable short tale should everything go as planned. And please consider submitting (or preparing) a story yourself if you have something that might work.

As of this posting (August 23, 2018) the Kickstarter is nearly a quarter of the way funded and less than two days have passed. This gives you the heads-up that he has serious support for his anthologies. That doesn't mean you shouldn't contribute, however. There are some great perks for those who do!

ZNB Anthology Kickstarter Follow-Up

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

ZNB (Zombies Need Brains) Logo

This is just a quick update Joshua Palmatier posted on the ZNB SFF anthology Kickstarter page...

Two Days in, Nearly $8K!

So, we've neared $8K after 48 hours, which is spectacular!  Can we reach $10K by the end of day 3?  I think we can!  I'll be pushing the Kickstarter tomorrow and hopefully we'll make it to the halfway point.  Keep up the good work on spreading the word!

I'm in the midst of setting up blog posts, AMAs, etc myself.  However, if any of you have contacts at specific SF&F blogs that you can put me in touch with, message me with the information and I'll get in touch.  Also, contacts at writer groups and such as well.

Basically, send me any suggestions you have about places where we can get the word out to people that might be interested.

Thank you all for backing this project early!  I won't relax until we're funded, so anything you can do to help out is appreciated.  Thanks again and I'll be back with more posts shortly!

Joshua

Please pass the word along to any SSF fans who might be interested. This is a good start, but there's a long way to go!

So, check it out! Maybe you'll want to donate and get some new reading material—or perhaps you'll get published in a quality anthology! (And, yes, I've already made my contribution—and I have an idea for a story to submit if—or when, I should say—it gets funded!)

Kickstarter - Zombies Need Brains SFF Anthologies

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

While at Shore Leave 39 this year, I talked with author/editor/publisher Joshua Palmatier for a while. Eventually the discussion got around to future projects. He mentioned he was going to do a Kickstarter for three new anthologies, but he hadn't come up with any solid ideas yet. He said to watch his website for a notice in August.

So I did.

He now has the Kickstarter up and running. Here are the subjects for the books!

This project will fund THREE science fiction and fantasy anthologies, titled THE RAZOR'S EDGE, GUILDS AND GLAIVES, and SECOND ROUND: A RETURN TO THE UR-BAR, containing approximately 14 all-original (no reprint) short stories each from established SF&F authors in the field. The books will be edited by Patricia Bray & Joshua Palmatier (SECOND ROUND: A RETURN TO THE UR-BAR), S.C. Butler & Joshua Palmatier (GUILDS AND GLAIVES), and Troy Bucher & Joshua Palmatier (THE RAZOR'S EDGE).

Joshua has a number of quality books out already, and if you'd like to help out with the next round of anthologies you can donate here (there are a lot of different levels and rewards!):

You can do more than just give money to the effort. If all goes as planned, you can submit your stories, too!

As we did in our previous anthologies, we plan to include the very best stories we can find, spanning the gamut from bestselling authors to new, previously unpublished voices, including an open submission window if the Kickstarter is successful, where anyone can submit their stories featuring the current themes for a chance to be part of the anthologies. And new this year, Zombies Need Brains is officially a "qualifying market" for the Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA)!

So, check it out! Maybe you'll want to donate and get some new reading material—or perhaps you'll get published in a quality anthology!

Update: Starship Farragut - The Crossing

An update to the update: from Update #33 via e-mail 04/08/2015

KICKSTARTER PERKS

"Last week, we had some additional shipments go out to folks and working to do another shipment this weekend, which we're targeting to include the INTL backers."

A while back, Farragut Films, the folks who create the Starship Farragut stories and movies, had a Kickstarter event to raise money for their latest project, a film called The Crossing. All told, they raised $20,173 for their project. I made a donation, and one of the perks for making a donation was to be listed as a contributor on their website.

While some of the other perks have been slow in arriving (although most have been delivered), they do have me listed on their donations page. I'm on the right-hand side, about the middle. Here is a tiny part of the contributor's list (there are quite a few of them!):

Image cut from The Crossing donations page

Farragut Films relies on donations to create their movies. Due to licensing and copyright rules governing Star Trek, they cannot generate revenue from the finished product. The up side to that is they allow you to download the films for free!

I hope to see some of the Farragut crew in person at the 2014 Shore Leave convention this August.

Pangaea Sci-Fi Kickstarter

Update: This project was funded on March 8, 2015!

The final tally was:
306 backers
$9,176 pledged of $8,000 goal

One of the writers I see on a semi-regular basis around the Mid-Atlantic region is sci-fi author Michael Jan Friedman. He, with a group of other writers, has started a Kickstarter project for an anthology called Pangaea. The idea behind the book is described on the Kickstarter page as "14 top science fiction and fantasy authors explore a world in which mankind lives--and always has lived--on a single super-continent! " Sounds like it might be interesting!

If you'd like to donate to support this effort (and get rewards!),
please visit their KICKSTARTER PAGE.

Update!

From the Kickstarter page update #15!
Here's something you don't see every day...

The Modala Imperative is a landmark artifact in the annals of Star Trek lore. A trade paperback compilation of two 1991 four-issue comic book mini-series, it features the first-ever crossover between the Original Trek characters and those of the Next Generation--predating both the Unification two-part episode and Scotty’s appearance in Relics--graced by a lovingly rendered Sonia Hillios cover. Our backers will receive a copy of The Modala Imperative signed (inside or outside) by series writers Michael Jan Friedman and Peter David as well as series editor Robert Greenberger. Just add $25 (including postage/handling in the U.S.) to any reward level of $25 or more. Outside the U.S. add $35 (including postage/handling). Then just send me a message letting me know and I'll take care of the rest.

Best regards,

Mike

Starship Farragut Kickstarter

Although science fiction isn't my favorite genre, I do dabble in it from time to time. And after spending the weekend with a bunch of Trekkies at Shore Leave 36, I have been keeping up with it a little more than before. So when I ran into this kickstarter plea from the folks who create the Starship Farragut stories, I had to give them a plug.

They're working on a big project (movie length) called The Crossing and need a little help in financing their endeavor.

If you have a few extra bucks, maybe you can help them out! And they still have a lot of prizes / gifts left for those who donate (as of 9/23/2014).
