An Early September Update

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

For those who still look here for news, I've decided to give an update on what I've been working on that might be of interest before my main monthly update on Patreon gets posted.

On Medium, I've posted a few things (2 articles and a haiku):

I am:

  • Working on a Shore Leave update (Patreon) and might have other convention news available by the time my monthly update comes out.

  • Looking at a possible short story submission. I have to think about how well it fits the guidelines.

  • Working on an article about poetry's conundrum (who reads poetry) for Medium. It might not be popular with some poets, but I hope it gives readers something to think about. Whether it's ready this month or next, I'm not sure...

  • I've even been playing with a few sketches! Who knows where that might lead.

  • Trying to decide if I should reconfigure my Patreon site (can't go back if I don't like it).

Also, feel free to leave a comment on whether you think it's worthwhile to continue on Blogger or just use Patreon as my default blog site. It would be much appreciated!

That's all. Carry on!

One More Year Down The Drain

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

But it wasn't so bad...

There was Shore Leave, of course. You can read about that HERE.

And you can read my November and December updates via these links.

Amazon killed off another platform, Kindle Vella. This will hit a lot of writers and made me rethink where I'll submit future works. I had been working on a couple of tales for that platform, but they are on hold. If you follow me, you know that author Terri Deno has been shifting her works to Kindle and Kindle Unlimited. I would imagine others are doing the same. Amazon never seemed to promote Vella very well and the interface was not the best.

I need to get working on artwork if I'm to have anything new for this year's show at Shore Leave. I have some sketches and ideas, but you can't sell those!

And I'm working on a couple of short stories. I submitted four stories last year and they were all rejected. I'm hoping 2025 will be better.

There has been lots of discussion about AI and how it will affect things in the writing and art world. It's not going away, and we'll have to deal with it.

And today it is snowing. It is a good time to sit and reflect on the past year and what I want to do in the future. I'm getting older and slowing down, so I have to choose what projects I want to focus on carefully!

Up to no good, it seems...

Well, I have been writing and have submitted a few stories. Just to prove I've been working a little, here are some link to my Medium articles , poems, and other stuff (as of September 2024)!

I've Had Enough Fun With Simily

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

I think it's time to end my experiment with Simily

I received this email from Simily this morning (June 14, 2023):

Important Changes to the Simily Platform

To Our Fellow Similians,

Simily’s mission has always been to build a place where creative writers and readers can thrive online. As the platform has grown, we noticed a shift in the quality of content and engagement on the site which took us further away from this mission. Over the past few months, our small team has spent countless hours and resources defending the site from bad actors focused on driving spam and bot traffic. (If you’ve been with us for a while, you understand the bumps in the road and we can’t thank you enough for sticking with us!)

It’s time we bring our focus back to creating a social platform that allows creators to share high-quality writing with an engaged audience.

We’ve spoken to hundreds of you and based on your feedback, we are excited to announce a series of changes to the Simily platform. Each decision was made in an effort to make Simily a home for creative writing and foster an engaging community of readers and writers. These changes were designed to set our Similians up for long-term success and we can’t wait to continue this journey with you all!

So, what’s different?

Social settings are changing. In an effort to support meaningful interactions on Simily, the ability to direct message other writers, create groups, and post in groups on Simily will now only be available to paid users.

There is an application process to become a Simily Writer. As of now, members will need to apply to become a writer on Simily. We will no longer allow anyone to publish whatever content they want. By curating the content on Simily, we hope to create a better, higher-quality experience for our writers and build a library of incredible stories for our readers.

I have stories on Simily, what happens now? If you posted on Simily before this change took effect, all of your stories will be reverted to drafts. We encourage you to apply to be a Simily Writer through our application process! If your application is not accepted (or you decline to apply) you have until August 1, 2023 to download your drafts from the site before they are deleted permanently. If you are approved as a Simily Writer, your content will be published live on the platform. All new writers will be required to apply for the ability to post content on our site.

Can I apply to be a Simily Writer? Absolutely! Submit your application through our application process!

What about my earnings? When an author is approved as a Simily Writer, all earnings from previous stories will be maintained. If you have a current balance above the minimum earnings threshold, you can request a payout by emailing hello@simily.co.

The following countries are eligible to be paid out through Simily: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States.

For additional information, please view our Community Guidelines and FAQs.

We know these are big changes for Simily! If you have any questions or would like to share feedback, please do not hesitate to reach out to hello@simily.co.

Thank you!

Allegra, Katie, and Shannon Signature

Simily Co-Founders

When I checked my Simily page this morning, I found that six of my stories had reverted to draft. Everything I have there has been posted before the changes took place. They said all would be reverted, but it seems they couldn't get that right, either. Did they forget? Are they not done? Who knows? And the posts that went back to draft were all my most recent posts. What they said and what they did don't match.

UPDATE June 14, 2023: All of my posts have been reverted to draft. END OF UPDATE

They also said we'd keep our earnings. That didn't quite work out either. I know others have complained about losing earnings previously.

And if you've followed my posts in other places, you'll know I wasn't happy about the repeated outages lasting for days with little (or no) information as to what was going on.

These statements worry me: "We will no longer allow anyone to publish whatever content they want. By curating the content on Simily, we hope to create a better, higher-quality experience for our writers and build a library of incredible stories for our readers." It doesn't say who will be "curating" or if there could be a discussion about it if a post is denied. It's just another form of censorship. I seldom (ever?) post anything controversial, but it doesn't sit well.

They do give an address for Simily in their e-mail. It's 4387 W Swamp Rd # 4718902 Doylestown, PA 18902-1039. 4387 W Swamp Rd Doylestown, PA 18902 is a Parcel Place, so they are using that as a mail drop. This brings up the possibility it is being run out of someone's basement/home office. Not necessarily bad thing, but not confidence inspiring—especially considering the other problems I've mentioned.

I really don't think the Simily folks are malicious. I think they're incompetent. Or perhaps less competent than they need to be. Just an opinion. Anyway, I'll be leaving Simily. Might take a few days to copy stuff and all, but it's time...

New Release! Slipping Through

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

I have stories out in a new anthology!

It's now available and I can pass on the news! It's called Slipping Through (click on the title to take you to Amazon) and it's all about passing through to other dimensions, the afterlife, or, well, who knows?

I have three entries in this anthology. One is a short story (Memory Lane) and the others are flash fiction (On the Flip Side & Wrapped in a Mystery). The other stories are from Miranda Kate (who put this all together), Michael Wombat, and Victoria Pearson. Here's the table of contents:

As you can see, there are a lot of stories here, so there's a good chance you'll find a few that strike your fancy. I don't have all my "Amazon Author page" stuff sorted out yet, but that will happen shortly...

If you want to see how this came about, you can read my previous Patreon post here.

Also, if you would like to see other stories and poems I've done, please check out this list!

Your Fingers Will Be Slipping Through The Pages

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

And the pages they will be Slipping Through will be those of an anthology from Miranda Kate!

Yes, it's been a while, but I have a couple of—oh, wait, make that three*—stories coming out in print thanks to Miranda Kate who invited me (and a couple of other authors) to write something for her reworked anthology titled Slipping Through.

Miranda wanted to publish the main story from her Slipping Through collection as a separate book. That meant the remaining book would probably be too short. She asked if she could use a flash fiction I'd written some years ago as a "flip side" to a story she had written. I, of course, agreed. The story is called Flip Side. As you can see, I put a lot of effort into that title...

Anyway, Miranda also asked if I had anything else that might work. I thought I had a story started, but I couldn't find it. Maybe it had just been in my head and I'd never written it down. When I told her that, she asked if I could write something new. I found a few paragraphs of a tale I'd begun years ago...

"I might have a story that could work," I said as my palms began to sweat. "I can probably have something for you in a week." I paused. "Well, maybe ten days."

"Ten days is fine," she replied. "As long as I know something is coming."

Nine days and 5,000 words later, I handed in Memory Lane. It has romance, motorcycles, and a bit of unsettling horror. I was quite relieved when she said it was perfect for her anthology.

Perfect is a relative term, however. It wasn't much better than a first draft, so we emailed back and forth a bit about corrections and wording.

After nailing down the main story, Miranda asked if I had anything else that might work since the other authors had submitted a greater number of stories than I had. She wanted to be fair about it. I sent here a couple of flash fiction tales. I don't really do a lot of stories about inter-dimensional/time travel, so I didn't have much. This will teach me to have more finished stories on hand. She chose one of the flash stories, Wrapped in a Mystery, for inclusion in the anthology. That makes three!

So, my stories are now coming out and should be available in both print and Kindle versions June 1st! There are also stories from the prolific Michael Wombat and Victoria Pearson in addition to Miranda's works. With all the stories she's added, it should be quite a large book!

Here is the cover!

I'll provide a link once it's available.

* I had to update my original post when Miranda picked a third story!

Note: Miranda's original cover for Slipping Through was different. So, if you want to get the new edition, make sure it has this cover!

Grand Finale: National Poetry Month

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

National Poetry Month has come and gone, but my poems, for better or worse, are here to stay—on Simily. Well, until I get enough to shove into a book and publish. Then I'll pull out those worth the effort (probably only about a quarter of them are worth a second editing) and add them to the others that are waiting to be placed into print. They're all first-draft quality for now, but that's what you get when you do one per day for a month.

Image of a old-fashioned quill pen and ink bottle.

I'll get back to finish this someday...

If you wish to read the poems I've done, an updated list follows. You do need a membership to Simily to read them, but a basic membership is free. All of these links will redirect you to the Simily sign-up/sign-in page unless you're already logged into Simily.

An Update To Neither Rhyme Nor Reason

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

I had written a post here 5 days ago about my efforts on Simily to write a poem each day for National Poetry Month. It was an experiment to determine if Simily was worth the effort and to put out consistent content for potential readers. Sadly, I hadn't had much in the way of readers—until 2 days ago. That's when people started reading one particular post.

It was the April 8th post titled There's No Business Like Snow Business. I have no idea why, but it must have been highlighted by Simily or some member of Simily. In the last 3 days, it has received 111 views. There's nothing special about it. I mean, it's just a haiku. It's nice enough, but probably the last one I'd pick of my posts as a shining example of poetry.

I've had a few other posts viewed, too, but nothing like that one. I'm not sure what to make of it.

Anyway...

If you wish to read the poems I've done, an updated list follows. You do have to have a membership to Simily to read them, but a basic membership is free. All of these links will take you to the sign-up page unless you're already logged into Simily.

Neither Rhyme Nor Reason?

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

If you're not into poetry, you might not know that April, in the United States, is National Poetry Month.

A few times in the past, I've done a poem per day for National Poetry Month. I did it here on Blogger some years ago. This year, I decided to try it on Simily in an effort to increase my content there and partly to see if Simily was a good platform on which to write.

Well, I'm ten days (and ten poems) in and I haven't had a single view. Not one.

I do realize that many of the poems I put out there are not of the highest quality. I'm doing this on the fly, so you can't expect the best. I don't have time to rewrite and edit much. And some are silly. Some rhyme. Some don't. I do think, however, a few of them are worthwhile.

I am wondering if it's Simily or my poetry...

If you wish to read the poems I've done, a list follows. You do have to have a membership to Simily to read them, but a basic membership is free. All of these links will take you to the sign-up page unless you're already logged into Simily.

What Am I Up To Now?

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

It's been a while since I've posted here. But that doesn't mean I've been idle. Well, not completely.

I have been posting on other sites. Here's a list of what's available since my last post here in early February...

On Medium:
Note: A Worm and a Wet Place and Trouble Comes in Threes are the first two parts of a serial titled The Dark Scent of Rain. A third part is coming soon!

On Patreon:
On Simily:

So, you can see I have been doing a little writing!

Best of all, I have a bit of a surprise coming—possibly before the end of this month. I can't say anything yet, but it involves a couple of my stories. More soon!

Assimilating Simily

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

If you've read my previous post, you know I've been trying to find traction among the various venues for publishing stories and poetry. One of these is Simily.

I have a story and a haiku out there at the moment. I'll be putting more there over the next few months and will do a big push during National Poetry Month (April). I've had a couple of reads, but no feedback yet. I'm really just starting out, so I can't expect a lot yet.

My non-public home page on Simily

Much of what I post there will have a format similar to what I've done on Medium. These are short stories and haiga-style haiku. I'll be borrowing a few of my old Blogger posts for content along with new (or reworked) material. The idea is to have a more consistent posting schedule (if time allows) which most folks say builds readership.

For longer stories, I need to continue to work on my Kindle Vella project and novella(s).

It is interesting that many writers on Simily are doing serialized stories like one would post on Kindle Vella. I would think posting on Vella would get more reads, but Simily is certainly easier even if the formatting isn't so great.

The one thing missing from Simily is a "friends" link where people can read without subscribing (If there is a way to do this, please let me know!). This is a feature I've found useful on Medium. You can access most of my Medium posts free by going through a public page I've set up on Patreon.

So, I'm still learning about Simily. Eventually, I would like to limit the places I post, but I need to find out what works best first.

In case you're on Simily, here are the links to my stories (as of January 8, 2023):
That's all for now! Thanks for reading!

Happy New Year?

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

I haven't had a lot of time for writing or art lately, but I'm hoping to get back in the swing of things for 2023. I've put out posts on Medium, Patreon (about Simily), and Simily looking to see if there is any interest and, if so, where. I'll try to be more active and consistent in posting until I can whittle things down to the more popular sites.

The Simily entry is a flash fiction horror story I borrowed from my blog with a few updates. So far, I can hear those crickets chirping away! I'm not sure how well Simily will work for stories with a lot of dialogue. The formatting isn't the best.

I did get to do a little work on a Kindle Vella story, but there's a lot to do on that before it's ready to publish.

I haven't done anything on Substack or the website. Now sure when/if that will happen...

I do have some news from other authors! Terri Deno has posted the first chapter of a new story on Wattpad. She had shown me the cover a long time ago, but hadn't had a story ready to go with it. Now you can begin reading Lola McAffrey's Great Disappearing Act today! Here's the blurb:

Lola McAffrey is in that sophomore limbo--she and her best friend Cori are no longer wide-eyed freshman, but they also aren't yet experiencing the privileges of being upperclassmen. When Lola comes up with a great idea for a social experiment to disappear, she risks everything--her friendships, her family stability, and maybe even chance at true love. Will it all be worth it in the end?

That's all I have for now!

Wait - I lied. I'm starting to collect books to give away at the Shore Leave convention in July. It should be quite a selection!

Okay, now I'm done!

Nothing To See Here

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

That's right. Just keep moving along...

Photo by Erik Mclean on Unsplash

To be honest, I've been a bit busy the last couple of years. For the most part, though, not with writing or artwork. I'm hoping that will change soon.

The last story I had accepted, Closure, has disappeared into limbo. My story, Closure, was accepted by Thirteen O'Clock Press for inclusion in their X6 anthology. Editing was finished. The cover artwork had been revealed. All the stories had been sent to the editor for publication, including a tiny poem I'd written that had been missed in an earlier anthology. And we waited for it to appear in print. And then we waited some more. The publisher has vanished. Nobody is sure if he is still alive. Attempts by myself and the editor to reach this person have not been successful. In this era of COVID, that might be a bad sign. The website hasn't been updated lately. The last Facebook post is over a year old, and shows the cover of the anthology.

Facebook post from March 28, 2021

So, it looks like I'm out of luck on this one. I haven't decided if I'll submit the story elsewhere or save it for inclusion in a self-published collection. The same goes for the poem.

I had submitted another short story, The Dark Side of the Moon, to an anthology back in February. I received a rejection just a couple of weeks ago. Although it's difficult to get a read on how a publisher feels about a story from a short rejection letter, I have the distinct impression they were not impressed. That might end up on Patreon. If the story really is that bad, it won't matter if I post it there. Nobody reads my Patreon posts anyway.

All of this means you can read my latest stories absolutely nowhere!

I still have old stuff out there. You can find anthologies published on Amazon with my stories HERE.

There are a few anthologies via Lulu, too, with my stories:

There you have it! Everything you need to know!

Someday, I'll have some real news to report. Until then, you'll have to rely on the brief musings I have on Medium

Thanks for stopping by!

Don't Tell Me What To Do

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

But you can give me a hint.

I've posted a Twitter poll asking what people would like me to write. At the moment the choices are quite broad:
  • Poetry/Haiku
  • Fiction
  • Non-fiction
  • Just please stop
If I get enough responses, I'll put out a new poll to ask about genre or format, depending on what folks are interested in. I'm doing this because I'm not sure what sort of writing people might like to see from me and, of what I've done, what do they like.

It doesn’t mean I’ll write exactly what the poll respondents want. If it’s fiction or poetry, I still have to have the idea appear in my brain. And if it’s non-fiction, it has to be something I find interesting. I don’t do political stuff. If that’s what you want, you can find plenty of that on the internet without me adding my two cents. Perhaps folks might prefer I hang up my typewriter altogether! It’s a valid opinion.

So, if you're interested, here's a link to the poll: My Twitter Poll

And if you don't do Twitter, you can  always leave a comment here!

The First Dollar I Ever Earned

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

No, I don't mean that initial greenback I was paid in a previous century.

Partial image of a United States one-dollar bill. Photo by K. R. Smith.

I'm talking about a monetary milestone for on-line writing, Medium to be precise. While I've sold stories and poems for considerably more, breaking the dollar barrier for web content was a big thing for me.

I've been writing on Medium for a while now, mostly haiku and other poetry with a few flash fiction stories thrown in for good measure. For all my efforts, I had only earned a few pennies through the Medium Partner Program and I had just two followers. I wasn't exactly setting the world on fire.

Then in August, Medium changed the rules. To stay in the Medium Partner Program, I needed to have 100 followers by the end of 2021. I had been on Medium since July of 2020 and had garnered only two. Doing a quick calculation, I determined it would require a bit over fifty years to reach that goal at my current pace. Although I figured this was the end of my time on Medium, I could understand their reasoning. It probably cost more than a penny to pay me that penny every month. My slow-and-steady plan was not going to cut it.

Still, I wanted my pennies. I wasn't sure what to do. The chances of reaching 100 followers by year's end seemed slim and none. Then, two events took place, rather serendipitously.

The first was the Medium Writer's Challenge. I'm sure the folks at Medium sent me an e-mail about it. I'm also sure I ignored it. It wasn't until writer Terri Deno mentioned she was entering that I decided to take a look. There wasn't a lot of time left in the contest, but I wrote articles for three of the four categories. I didn't get any new followers, but I did get a lot more people reading my stories and my earnings soared. By "soared" I mean that instead of pennies, I was up into nickel and dime range. All three of my contest articles had been selected for what Medium calls "further distribution." This means they promote the story to other readers. Without this, you're basically hoping someone stumbles over your writing and reads it. This limited success pushed me to write more articles and stories for Medium.

The second  event was a post by JL Matthews titled Who Needs 100 Followers? He said that if you had less than 100 followers to leave a comment on the article and he would follow back and encourage others to do the same. He was an interesting writer, so I did.

That's when it all started to snowball. The people in the responses started to look at each other and follow other writers there. Within a few weeks, I had over 60 followers. I reviewed these and followed back almost all of them. There were a good number of interesting articles by these folks and I will need to go back and do a bit of reading!

My next step was to search for and follow writers who had similar interests. I found and followed them. Many of them followed back. And quite a few others followed me on their own. Some of these I followed back, too. I'm not on Medium to get into politics or to promote someone's personal cause du jour, so I didn't follow them all, yet I was soon above the Medium Partner Program cutoff number. I went from 2 to over 130 in a single month (I'm currently at 155). And I've learned a few things from the articles I've been able to read from my new followers (unless you're a paying member, you get three free reads per month). I think this will work out well.

Most amazing of all was that I not only earned my first dollar on Medium, but my second as well.

Chart from Medium showing I had earned $2.15 for September.

Whether or not I can continue (or perhaps increase) this earnings pace remains to be seen. But it is nice to know I have the chance. I'll have to keep writing there to keep up reader interest, but I've never had a case of writer's block in my life. So, I'll keep at it for a while and see how things go.

I don't know if Medium is where I need/want to be long-term, but now I have a reason to give it a try. Maybe in another year I'll have a better idea where to concentrate my efforts. I want to try Kindle Vella. And I continue to work on my flash fiction collection (albeit at a glacial rate). And I need to get back to doing artwork. And my guitar hasn't been picked up in how many months?

So, yes, there's a lot going on. But it's nice to have options.
