     The few residents of this part of the city, long abandoned by all but the hopeless, voiced no complaints when Bernie tossed the paper he had dug from the trash can onto the sidewalk. As a few drops of rain dotted the pavement, he looked up briefly, then went back to scrounging. He laughed as he pulled out a tattered prize, and said, "Somebody forgot their umbrella today!" But no one was listening. He had been forgotten, too.
