Mid-Week Flash Challenge - Week 142

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

This story is for Miranda Kate's weekly flash challenge. This is from Miranda's post:

This week's photo is of a sculpture by Rook Floro. He calls it 'Shadow.' If click on the link you will see a variety of angles it is taken at.

Here's a link to the prompt image.

Please note that anyone can join in with a story up to 750 words. Mine has 699 words for those who are counting (not including the title and byline).

The Shadows of Vagus

    by K. R. Smith

The planet is officially known as HD 254618 c, but as best we could tell, the primitive beings who live here call it Vagus. It was chosen to be the most distant outpost humans had ever attempted. Because of that, we would need to be self-sufficient for decades.

As planets go, it was quite hospitable. The few native inhabitants were peaceful, even timid, and as accepting of our presence as could be hoped, even offering to help build our shelters. It was not always easy to communicate with the Vagusians, as we called them for wont of a better name. They had a limited vocabulary, relying on hand signals much of the time. Still, they were patient, and we all seemed to manage things together somehow to the benefit of both.

While life wasn't the easiest on Vagus, it wasn't terrible, either. The days, filled with the routine tasks of farming, setting up the base for future arrivals, and making sure the shelters were clean and repaired had become routine — even dull, to be honest. Until the comet appeared, that is.

The first thing we noticed was the Vagusians mostly stood around to watch the comet once it became visible. That slowed our progress considerably. When we attempted to inquire about their fascination with the comet, they would point to the sky, the ground, and then the dark hills in the distance. It didn't make any sense to us.

As the comet grew nearer, they became anxious and wouldn't come out of their huts when it was visible. We tried to explain that the comet wouldn't hit their planet, but that seemed beyond their comprehension. Must be a superstitious lot, we figured. Any of their children, who seemed to be as excited as we were about this otherworldly event, were given a harsh scolding if caught outside. Well, that's what it sounded like to us. The Vagusians had never exhibited that sort of behavior before. Eventually, they didn't come out at all.

On the night the comet passed, many from our colony stood on a small rise to enjoy the display. I had duties inside and was more than a little perturbed to miss what might be the chance of a lifetime. During our break, the few of us pulling shifts decided to check the external cameras. Even a little peek at the action was better than nothing.

A few hundred meters away, we could see our crewmembers looking up at the comet. Then Sarah, who was watching on a bigger screen in the main section, said it looked like it was starting to snow. We were passing through the comet's tail, and talk came up that perhaps there was enough water coming down to cause this to happen. It was just a few flakes at first. Then it came down so fast we could barely see the crew.

That's when the radio calls came in. It wasn't voices, just screams. Whatever was in the snow appeared to stick and burn. Perhaps dissolve would be a better word. A few wanted to put on hazard suits and try to rescue them. We weren't really sure if that would work. Before we could make a decision, the snow had stopped. So had the calls on the radio.

When we finally ventured out, all that remained of those watching the comet were black, glassy ashes in the form of humans, looking like frozen shadows. The celestial snow was gone.

When the Vagusians arrived, they began to carry our dead towards the hills. Not knowing what else to do, we followed. They seemed quite solemn, almost grieving, while they performed their task. As we approached the dark hills, we understood. Body upon glassy body of Vagusians, from who knows how long ago, were stacked high above the plains. Now many of us would join them.

It took a while, but our small group slowly began to comprehend the Vagusian language as their mixture of words and gestures became clearer. They had tried to explain the cycle and how the comet had returned. And they hadn't been pointing at the ground; they had been pointing at their own shadows — the shadows of Vagus.

Squirrels And More!

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

On the publishing front, the editor for Lonesome Train, the anthology containing my latest short story titled Momma Knows Best, says it is in the final stages of editing and should be available soon. Not soon enough, but soon. It's all relative, I suppose.

For those who are more likely to visit my blog here than find me elsewhere, I wanted to let you know about my Patreon Haiku post for April. This particular post is free for everybody to view and it has cute pictures of squirrels. And a haiku. What more could one possibly want?

Image of gray squirrel

Anyway, click on this Patreon link and you'll soon be enjoying this post. Okay, I don't really know if you'll enjoy it, but I'm an optimist.

While you're at it, please consider helping these writers!

Troy Blackford and his family is having a difficult time due to the potentially fatal illness of one of his sons. Help him out if you can. You can also find him on Twitter.

And last, but not least, Terri Deno has a new book of poetry available:  If It Was New York, Summer 2009. Please consider purchasing a copy. Writing is her only means of support, so let's support her writing!

April Is Twice As Nice!

It's officially April, so we have two events starting this month!

Image of quill and pen

First is National Poetry Month.

If you'd like, visit the website and you can get a free poster!

I know a few folks who will be doing a bit of poetry for the occasion. I'm sure Terri Deno will have something out there, or you can a copy of her new book of poetry And check my Patreon site for a free visual haiku (part of my monthly series).  You don't have to be a member of Patreon for this one. It should be available soon. My little poem will be to celebrate Squirrel Week, an annual feature of the Washington Post, and possible the best part of that newspaper. Well, okay, I like the crossword puzzle, too.

There's also Camp Nanowrimo.

I won't be participating, but check out a few writers on the web - it shouldn't be hard to find one who is. Or maybe you should just try it yourself. It's a great way to force yourself into starting that novel you always said you'd write!

Shore Leave 40 Is Coming Soon!

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

Yes, the annual Shore Leave Sci-fi convention is only a couple of months away. It sneaks up on me every year. I go to meet WRITERS and CELEBRITIES, and try to keep up with what's going on in the sci-fi world. This has been a difficult year at best, and I'm not sure how much of the convention I'll be able to attend, but I hope to spend some time there.

If you want to get an idea of what the convention is about, here's a short video! (This may not show well on mobile devices.)

Video courtesy of BCPL Online (Baltimore County Public Library)

BTW, I'll be giving away a few books from authors I know and maybe have a couple of works in the art show. The don't have a direct link for the art show yet (they aren't the best at getting information out...), but it should be coming soon. Until then, click HERE.

Shore Leave 39 And Free Books!

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

We interrupt this blog post to present a bit of important Shore Leave news...

They have actually posted the schedules on the web BEFORE the conference started this year! This is nearly unheard of. You can see them here: Shore Leave 39 Schedules

We now return to our regularly scheduled blog post...

Yes, I'll be attending Shore Leave again this year. Looking forward to the writing workshops, the art show, and meeting a few authors. I hope to do a blog post from there as well.

And if you see me there, it may pay to hang close by! Well, within a reasonable distance—I like my personal space. Anyway, I might just be handing out a few free books—not only those with my stories, but from other writers, too! Yes, I know these aren't all sci-fi titles, but the folks who attend these shows don't just read sci-fi! And if they do, I feel it's my duty to broaden their horizons. I'll have horror, romance, and more, more, more! Here's what I have lined up so far:

Some of the books to give away at Shore Leave 39

Tales From the Bully Box, an anti-bullying anthology
(with my story, One Above Zero)
Seeing What Develops, a romance by Terri Deno
Outside the Lines, a romance by Beth Rhodes
All the What Ifs, a coming-of-age story by Angela Lynn

Some of the books to give away at Shore Leave 39

Gothic Blue Book III (Graveyard Edition), a horror anthology
(with my poem, The Ballad of Drunken Jack)
Mostly Dark, a flash fiction collection by Miranda Kate
Human 76, a post-apocalyptic anthology by Lisa Shambrook and many others
(includes my story, The Song of Aiden)

Some of the books to give away at Shore Leave 39

A Symphony of Dragons, a collection of dragon tales by Lisa Shambrook
Dead Men's Tales, a pirate-themed horror anthology
(with my story,  Skarett's Treasure)

Giving away these copies is a great way to help the authors gain a wider audience and for me to reclaim a little free space around the house, especially since I either have another hard copy of these, an eBook version, or both.

Even if you don't want a free book (yeah, like that would ever happen...), please stop and say hello—especially if you are a writer, and doubly so if you are a reader!

See you there!

This Month's Free Photos - In Your Dreams

Just a reminder: It's okay to leave comments!

This month is going to be a little different. I've been playing around with CNN. No, not that network—Google's convolutional neural network (aka CNN). Yes, they let you do that. For free. And it doesn't hurt a bit. Let me explain...

You may have noted that I do a little artwork. Very little, unfortunately. Still, I like to check out what's happening in the art world from the periphery on which I exist. Sometimes I even draw or paint something. A while back I stumbled onto a tool that really caught my attention and I've finally had a chance to work with it.

Google has created code for modifying images called DeepDream (or Deep Dream, depending upon the source). You can read about it HERE. I've spent a little time playing around with it on the web (link below) and thought I'd share a little of what I've done with you. Literally.

It works like this:

  1. You create a user id / password to get into the app (they don't ask for a lot of info)
  2. You upload an image (I've used both JPEG and PNG)
  3. Select whether you want to do a Deep Style or a Deep Dream (and how many levels!)
  4. Pick the parameters you want to apply
  5. Click on the generate button

The picture you make can be saved, downloaded, deleted, or re-edited, and can be kept private or made public.

This is a sample of what you can do with an image:

Original image of pocket watch
Original image of pocket watch

Both of the following images were made from the original using the Deep Style algorithms.

A Deep Style modification using the Simpsons themeA Deep Style modification

This one is done using one of the Deep Dream filters. You'll have to open it to a larger size to get the full effect.

A Deep Style alteration of the pocket watch image

Here's a closeup of the dial. Slightly disturbing, isn't it? Looks like the watch is the one doing the watching!

Disturbing closeup of the pocket watch dial

Now let's see what happens when we work with some nice flowers...

Original wood hyacinth photo I took last year
Original wood hyacinth photo I took last year

For the first step, here are the parameters:
  • Type = Valyrian
  • Resolution = normal 1200x1200
  • Inception depth = deep
  • Neural network layer = inception_3b-output

Hyacinth - first dream

For round 2:
  • Type = Neuron
  • Inception depth = deep
  • Transformation = none
  • Neural network layer = inception_3b-output

Hyacinth - deeper dream

Finally:
  • Type = Spirits
  • Inception depth = deep
  • Transformation = none
  • Neural network layer = inception_3b-output

Hyacinth - deeper yet

Even though a version of the original photo is here and I've given out the parameters I used, if you tried to do the same transformation the final output would not be exactly the same. There's something in the way the algorithms work that makes it slightly different each time.

Anyway, these are my free photos for the month! Use them any way you want!

And, as promised, here's a link to the site: Deep Dream Generator

If you're so inclined, you can read about convolutional neural networks HERE. Personally, I'd skip it and just look at the pretty pictures.

Check back again when you can. Maybe I'll have something even better!

This Month's Free Photo - Venus

Just a reminder: It's okay to leave comments!

Ready for another of my cheesy free photos? Well, you're getting one anyway. Someday, I'll manage to post a picture here that is worthy, but this will have to do for now (I seems to say that a lot on these free photo posts...).

Over the years I've had more than one sky photo on my blog. I like sunsets and the colors they display. This time I caught Venus sparkling in the gloaming as I was getting off the train from work. I've been looking for an excuse to use the word gloaming, and this post is it. One more thing off my list. Anyway, Venus is really bright this month, so even my cell phone could get a decent shot. It's often easier to get a picture of the Moon or bright planets with a cheap phone camera during dusk or early morning when the contrast is not as great. That's my tip for the day.

This Month's Free Photos - The Nature Of Winter

Just a reminder: It's okay to leave comments!

Terri Deno's efforts reminded me that I haven't posted any photos lately. Not that I've ever been very regular about it. Still, I had a couple of pics that should work. They're just phone images, so they're not high resolution, but here they are!

Jailbirds

Here are a couple of woodpeckers hanging around the deck near the feeder. The cold weather sure brings a lot of activity to the suet and seed we have for them.

Old Wall

This is an old wall (well over 100 years old) that used to delineate the farm fields in what is now a park. I hike or jog there when I can. These stones are what the farmers used for fencing before barbed wire came about.

Okay, so they're not so exciting, but it's all I can do for the moment. Check back again sometime. Maybe I'll have something better (I hope!).

This Month's Free Photos - National Harbor

Just a reminder: It's okay to leave comments!

My original plan was to wait until October to post these (don't want you to get spoiled!), but I didn't have anything else ready for the blog. So here they are! Consider them an early treat for Halloween.

These were taken after the Airmen of Note concert on September 17, 2016. It's the Ferris wheel at National Harbor, brightly lighted in dazzling colors. They change as the wheel turns, so the two pictures have slightly different hues. The second picture is just the reflection in the water.

This Month's Free Photos - Sunsets And Food - Maybe?

Just a reminder: It's okay to leave comments!

Yes, I know I'm supposed to get back to the Shore Leave posts, but I keep getting side-tracked. There was a great sunset this evening, so I took a couple of shots to post here. The sky got progressively more orange as the sun set.

And finally, on a completely unrelated subject, we have this one...

Friends Kabob restaurant in Vienna, Virginia

I've had beef kabobs and chicken kabobs, but this I'm not sure about...

Just in case YOU would like to try it, here's the info:

Take a friend with you when you go. It's always more fun that way. You know, like the guy who's a real cut-up. Let me know how that goes...

Well, that's all for now. Maybe in a month or three I'll post some new pictures!

This Month's Free Photos - Moonstruck

Just a reminder: It's okay to leave comments!

A sliver of a moon obliged by appearing during the twilight hours allowing my little point-and-shoot camera to capture it with not-great but acceptable photos. If you zoom in on the first photo, you can even see the hint of a crater or two. Not bad for a the type of camera used (Nikon Coolpix S6800). Eat your heart out, Hubble!

This Month's Free Photos - Roses

Just a reminder: It's okay to leave comments!

Oddly enough, I have a few new free photos to post even though it hasn't been a month since my last posting. Think of it as an early June entry.

No aliens here (and that's the story I'm sticking to), it's just the inner part of this dandelion (below) that sprouted along the side of the house.

Don't count on early editions of free photos too often. I barely get them posted at all!

This Month's Free Photos - Earth and Sky

Just a reminder: It's okay to leave comments!

It started out as This Week's Free Photos. Now, it's This Month's Free Photos. Perhaps I should rename these posts This Year's Free Photos. I tend to be a bit irregular in putting up new images.

While waiting for the Human 76 post-apocalyptic anthology to come out (it happens to contain a story I wrote - The Song of Aiden), I thought I'd post a couple of free images. They're just phone-camera pics, so they aren't great, but it's what I've got...

I've always been intrigued by the colors of the sky when the sun is about to go down and blue hovers near indigo, fading to black. The air has to be clear to get this effect. I noticed it a few evenings ago and took a shot with my phone.

Earlier that day I met this snake (a garter snake) as I got off the train on the way home. There is a lot of open area around the make-shift station I frequent, so finding wildlife there isn't surprising.

The Book:
A sword holds power.
A sword holds promise.
And a sword holds darkness.

L.C. Mortimer's editorial debut features tales of magic and darkness from authors who explore what it truly means to wield the power of a sword. My Story - The Sword of Hexworthy Manor:
Gwendolyn is a young girl living with her grandfather and a housekeeper named Mildred in an old manor near Hexworthy, a village in the moors of Dartmoor. As the last direct descendant of the family, he presents her with a sword, the only family heirloom left of any value. With her imagination in overdrive, she goes to play in the old ruins on the estate and finds, quite by accident, the way to a world she never knew existed. This Week's Free Photo - Jack-In-The-Pulpits

As always, I am behind in posting my free photos...

Yesterday evening I took my little point-and-shoot camera with me as a jogged* through the trails of Gunpowder State Park. I was hoping to take a few shots of wildflowers to post here. Only a few were visible, though, and the low light of the setting sun in the woods didn't help. I did catch a Jack-in-the-pulpit, however, glowing in the last rays of the sun.

Stop back again! I'll have more photos for you next week (well, eventually...)!

* To say that I "jogged" is taking liberties with the meaning if the word. It's been over a decade since I last entered a race. I've put on a few pounds since then. It may be more appropriate to say that I "waddled at a faster pace  than normal."

This Week's Free Photo - If You Ever Thought Your Day Was Bad

Yes, it's been a long time since I posted a weekly photo. I apologize. I've been meaning to put this on the blog since the summer, but I've been busy. It has nothing to do with writing, but every writer has a rough day, so...

All I can say is, if you thought your day was bad, imagine how the guy with the red truck feels.

This Week's Free Photo - Astilbe

Once again I am behind in posting my free photos. Instead "This Week's Free Photo," perhaps I should call it "This Year's Free Photo."
