This Month's Free Photos - In Your Dreams

Just a reminder: It's okay to leave comments!

This month is going to be a little different. I've been playing around with CNN. No, not that network—Google's convolutional neural network (aka CNN). Yes, they let you do that. For free. And it doesn't hurt a bit. Let me explain...

You may have noted that I do a little artwork. Very little, unfortunately. Still, I like to check out what's happening in the art world from the periphery on which I exist. Sometimes I even draw or paint something. A while back I stumbled onto a tool that really caught my attention and I've finally had a chance to work with it.

Google has created code for modifying images called DeepDream (or Deep Dream, depending upon the source). You can read about it HERE. I've spent a little time playing around with it on the web (link below) and thought I'd share a little of what I've done with you. Literally.

It works like this:

  1. You create a user id / password to get into the app (they don't ask for a lot of info)
  2. You upload an image (I've used both JPEG and PNG)
  3. Select whether you want to do a Deep Style or a Deep Dream (and how many levels!)
  4. Pick the parameters you want to apply
  5. Click on the generate button

The picture you make can be saved, downloaded, deleted, or re-edited, and can be kept private or made public.

This is a sample of what you can do with an image:

Original image of pocket watch

Both of the following images were made from the original using the Deep Style algorithms.

A Deep Style modification using the Simpsons themeA Deep Style modification

This one is done using one of the Deep Dream filters. You'll have to open it to a larger size to get the full effect.

A Deep Style alteration of the pocket watch image

Here's a closeup of the dial. Slightly disturbing, isn't it? Looks like the watch is the one doing the watching!

Disturbing closeup of the pocket watch dial

Now let's see what happens when we work with some nice flowers...

Original wood hyacinth photo I took last year
Original wood hyacinth photo I took last year

For the first step, here are the parameters:
  • Type = Valyrian
  • Resolution = normal 1200x1200
  • Inception depth = deep
  • Neural network layer = inception_3b-output

Hyacinth - first dream

For round 2:
  • Type = Neuron
  • Inception depth = deep
  • Transformation = none
  • Neural network layer = inception_3b-output

Hyacinth - deeper dream

Finally:
  • Type = Spirits
  • Inception depth = deep
  • Transformation = none
  • Neural network layer = inception_3b-output

Hyacinth - deeper yet

Even though a version of the original photo is here and I've given out the parameters I used, if you tried to do the same transformation the final output would not be exactly the same. There's something in the way the algorithms work that makes it slightly different each time.

Anyway, these are my free photos for the month! Use them any way you want!

And, as promised, here's a link to the site: Deep Dream Generator

If you're so inclined, you can read about convolutional neural networks HERE. Personally, I'd skip it and just look at the pretty pictures.

Check back again when you can. Maybe I'll have something even better!

This Month's Free Photo - Venus

Just a reminder: It's okay to leave comments!

Ready for another of my cheesy free photos? Well, you're getting one anyway. Someday, I'll manage to post a picture here that is worthy, but this will have to do for now (I seems to say that a lot on these free photo posts...).

Over the years I've had more than one sky photo on my blog. I like sunsets and the colors they display. This time I caught Venus sparkling in the gloaming as I was getting off the train from work. I've been looking for an excuse to use the word gloaming, and this post is it. One more thing off my list. Anyway, Venus is really bright this month, so even my cell phone could get a decent shot. It's often easier to get a picture of the Moon or bright planets with a cheap phone camera during dusk or early morning when the contrast is not as great. That's my tip for the day.

This Month's Free Photos - The Nature Of Winter

Just a reminder: It's okay to leave comments!

Terri Deno's efforts reminded me that I haven't posted any photos lately. Not that I've ever been very regular about it. Still, I had a couple of pics that should work. They're just phone images, so they're not high resolution, but here they are!

Here are a couple of woodpeckers hanging around the deck near the feeder. The cold weather sure brings a lot of activity to the suet and seed we have for them.

Old Wall

This is an old wall (well over 100 years old) that used to delineate the farm fields in what is now a park. I hike or jog there when I can. These stones are what the farmers used for fencing before barbed wire came about.

Okay, so they're not so exciting, but it's all I can do for the moment. Check back again sometime. Maybe I'll have something better (I hope!).

This Month's Free Photos - National Harbor

Just a reminder: It's okay to leave comments!

My original plan was to wait until October to post these (don't want you to get spoiled!), but I didn't have anything else ready for the blog. So here they are! Consider them an early treat for Halloween.

These were taken after the Airmen of Note concert on September 17, 2016. It's the Ferris wheel at National Harbor, brightly lighted in dazzling colors. They change as the wheel turns, so the two pictures have slightly different hues. The second picture is just the reflection in the water.

Well, that's all for now. Maybe in a month or three I'll post some new pictures!

This Month's Free Photos - Sunsets And Food - Maybe?

Just a reminder: It's okay to leave comments!

Yes, I know I'm supposed to get back to the Shore Leave posts, but I keep getting side-tracked. There was a great sunset this evening, so I took a couple of shots to post here. The sky got progressively more orange as the sun set.

And finally, on a completely unrelated subject, we have this one...

Friends Kabob restaurant in Vienna, Virginia

I've had beef kabobs and chicken kabobs, but this I'm not sure about...

Just in case YOU would like to try it, here's the info:

Take a friend with you when you go. It's always more fun that way. You know, like the guy who's a real cut-up. Let me know how that goes...

Well, that's all for now. Maybe in a month or three I'll post some new pictures!

This Month's Free Photos - Moonstruck

Just a reminder: It's okay to leave comments!

A sliver of a moon obliged by appearing during the twilight hours allowing my little point-and-shoot camera to capture it with not-great but acceptable photos. If you zoom in on the first photo, you can even see the hint of a crater or two. Not bad for a the type of camera used (Nikon Coolpix S6800). Eat your heart out, Hubble!

This Month's Free Photos - Roses

Just a reminder: It's okay to leave comments!

Oddly enough, I have a few new free photos to post even though it hasn't been a month since my last posting. Think of it as an early June entry.

No aliens here (and that's the story I'm sticking to), it's just the inner part of this dandelion (below) that sprouted along the side of the house.

This Month's Free Photos - Earth and Sky

Just a reminder: It's okay to leave comments!

It started out as This Week's Free Photos. Now, it's This Month's Free Photos. Perhaps I should rename these posts This Year's Free Photos. I tend to be a bit irregular in putting up new images.

While waiting for the Human 76 post-apocalyptic anthology to come out (it happens to contain a story I wrote - The Song of Aiden), I thought I'd post a couple of free images. They're just phone-camera pics, so they aren't great, but it's what I've got...

I've always been intrigued by the colors of the sky when the sun is about to go down and blue hovers near indigo, fading to black. The air has to be clear to get this effect. I noticed it a few evenings ago and took a shot with my phone.

Earlier that day I met this snake (a garter snake) as I got off the train on the way home. There is a lot of open area around the make-shift station I frequent, so finding wildlife there isn't surprising.

This Week's Free Photo - Mercer Lake

Just a reminder: It's okay to leave comments!

This is my free photo of the week post! In my defense, I didn't say EVERY week, even if that was implied...

I took a little walk around Mercer Lake yesterday. I had to get away from things for a while and partake in a bit of exercise. The loop around is about 4 miles, so that should do it for this year.

All I had was my phone camera with me, so the pics aren't the highest quality. But they are free for you to use! It always amazes me how many trails, ponds, and lakes there are in the DC suburbs, and that in such a densely populated area it is still possible to find (somewhat) natural places to which one can escape. At the spot where I stood for the first photo, not a single house was in sight.

Although it's late in the year, there are still a few flowers blooming. I have no idea what this little blue one is.

And I couldn't do a picture post without a few mushrooms sprouting from an old tree trunk!

This Week's Free Photo - Jack-In-The-Pulpits

As always, I am behind in posting my free photos...

Yesterday evening I took my little point-and-shoot camera with me as a jogged* through the trails of Gunpowder State Park. I was hoping to take a few shots of wildflowers to post here. Only a few were visible, though, and the low light of the setting sun in the woods didn't help. I did catch a Jack-in-the-pulpit, however, glowing in the last rays of the sun.

* To say that I "jogged" is taking liberties with the meaning if the word. It's been over a decade since I last entered a race. I've put on a few pounds since then. It may be more appropriate to say that I "waddled at a faster pace  than normal."

This Week's Free Photo - If You Ever Thought Your Day Was Bad

Yes, it's been a long time since I posted a weekly photo. I apologize. I've been meaning to put this on the blog since the summer, but I've been busy. It has nothing to do with writing, but every writer has a rough day, so...

All I can say is, if you thought your day was bad, imagine how the guy with the red truck feels.

This Week's Free Photo - Azaleas

Yes, I know it's been a while since I've posted a free photo. To make it up to you, I'm posting a bunch of 'em.

Just a few miles north of Washington, DC is the Brighton Dam Azalea Garden. Each spring, they open the garden to the public when the azaleas bloom. The garden is about five acres in size, and there is additional open space in a park on the other side of the road. Here's a sample of what you'll see!

This Week's Free Photo - Night Snow

This is a bit of a surrealistic scene in the snow this week. It almost looks like a squadron of UFOs, but they're just the lights in a parking lot. The snow was coming down quite heavily at the time - which it seemed to be doing all week. I've shoveled enough this year...

This Week's Free Photo - Sunset Near DC

It's been well over a week since my last "weekly" image, so I'm posting two pictures for the price of one!

The sunset was quite nice this evening - although it was starting to get quite cold. The sun on the wispy clouds gave them a beautiful color, and with the deep blue of the sky in the background, I had to get out the camera and take a shot.

This Week's Free Photo - Sunrise Over The Ocean

A little change of pace this time around. Instead of snow, think summer. Summer along the ocean, to be exact. These are from a few years ago, but I thought it might be nice to see some pictures that would warm people up instead of making them shiver that much more during the shortest days of the year.

I happened to be up and about on a morning when the air was fairly clear over the Atlantic and the sun was visible as it popped up over the horizon. Quite often, there is a layer of clouds that prevent you from seeing this. Also, the ocean was very calm that morning.

By the way, that little fin out there is a dolphin (Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, T. truncatus), not a shark... they're quite common along here. So are sharks, but they don't seem to cause any problems.
