Mid-December 2025 Update

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

First, a bit of news:

The Shore Leave convention have listed a few new celebrity guests for next year's convention. They have announced Laurette Spang and Herbert Jefferson Jr. of Battlestar Galactica fame and also Marta Kristen of Lost in Space. I've attached the latest flyer with more info for those interested. Other than the author list, there isn't any info yet on writing panels. That won't be available for a while.

Still haven't decided on whether to attend the Farpoint convention yet. They have author and screenwriter David Gerrold listed as attending, but he has a GoFundMe for health problems (why does it seem so many writers have health problems?) so I'm wondering if he'll actually be there.

And I've posted a few things on Medium!

December 2025

November 2025

As far as I know, author Michael Wombat is still hanging in there, but there is no good news to be had. About a month ago, he posted this on Bluesky:

Some of you know this already, but I see no reason to keep it a secret. My oncologist told me on Friday that they had done all they can, the cancer is still growing, and that I have months, maybe weeks, left to live. I have no idea what's to come, but I'll be on here as long as I can.

You can cheer him up a little by putting in an order for his latest book (a collaboration with Miranda Kate, Lisa Shambrook, and Victoria Pearson ) titled Agents of Secrets and Lies (The Summer Realm Book 1).

A book cover with a grey and red parrot flying high over snow-covered mountains.

With those four writers, it's bound to be good.

That's about all for now!

Grand Finale: National Poetry Month

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

National Poetry Month has come and gone, but my poems, for better or worse, are here to stay—on Simily. Well, until I get enough to shove into a book and publish. Then I'll pull out those worth the effort (probably only about a quarter of them are worth a second editing) and add them to the others that are waiting to be placed into print. They're all first-draft quality for now, but that's what you get when you do one per day for a month.

Image of a old-fashioned quill pen and ink bottle.

I'll get back to finish this someday...

If you wish to read the poems I've done, an updated list follows. You do need a membership to Simily to read them, but a basic membership is free. All of these links will redirect you to the Simily sign-up/sign-in page unless you're already logged into Simily.

An Update To Neither Rhyme Nor Reason

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

I had written a post here 5 days ago about my efforts on Simily to write a poem each day for National Poetry Month. It was an experiment to determine if Simily was worth the effort and to put out consistent content for potential readers. Sadly, I hadn't had much in the way of readers—until 2 days ago. That's when people started reading one particular post.

It was the April 8th post titled There's No Business Like Snow Business. I have no idea why, but it must have been highlighted by Simily or some member of Simily. In the last 3 days, it has received 111 views. There's nothing special about it. I mean, it's just a haiku. It's nice enough, but probably the last one I'd pick of my posts as a shining example of poetry.

I've had a few other posts viewed, too, but nothing like that one. I'm not sure what to make of it.

Anyway...

If you wish to read the poems I've done, an updated list follows. You do have to have a membership to Simily to read them, but a basic membership is free. All of these links will take you to the sign-up page unless you're already logged into Simily.

Neither Rhyme Nor Reason?

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

If you're not into poetry, you might not know that April, in the United States, is National Poetry Month.

A few times in the past, I've done a poem per day for National Poetry Month. I did it here on Blogger some years ago. This year, I decided to try it on Simily in an effort to increase my content there and partly to see if Simily was a good platform on which to write.

Well, I'm ten days (and ten poems) in and I haven't had a single view. Not one.

I do realize that many of the poems I put out there are not of the highest quality. I'm doing this on the fly, so you can't expect the best. I don't have time to rewrite and edit much. And some are silly. Some rhyme. Some don't. I do think, however, a few of them are worthwhile.

I am wondering if it's Simily or my poetry...

If you wish to read the poems I've done, a list follows. You do have to have a membership to Simily to read them, but a basic membership is free. All of these links will take you to the sign-up page unless you're already logged into Simily.

Mid-Week Flash Challenge - Week 148

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

This story is for Miranda Kate's weekly flash challenge. This is from Miranda's post:

This week's photo is from Christopher Marr, a Scottish photographer.   He shared this on twitter on 21st of September 2019 and said "I have so many questions ... I found this bench in the middle of some woods I was visiting for the first time. No paths or walkways, literally stumbled across it perfect".

Here's a link to the prompt image.

Please note that anyone can join in with a story up to 750 words. It's been a while since I've done a poem for a flash challenge, so this one's a bit short - only 111 words for those who are counting (not including the title and byline). And it doesn't even rhyme, so if you were worried it might be one of my rhyming poems, you may proceed without concern. Some people have an aversion to poems that rhyme, and while I don't, I promise to warn all future readers when one is posted here.

Benched

Alone with my thoughts, I listen in the stillness For a memory. The bench is still here, Neglected, Moldering away in the wood. It was this place, many years ago, We sat together, Also alone. If I close my eyes
I can hear her words, Her laughter. That was our first time together, But not our last. That would come much later. And, so, here I am again, As if my presence would change things, Make it all like it was. But I am old, too, Like this bench; Worn out and unneeded. Perhaps, though, I'll sit for a while And enjoy her company once more If only in my mind.     -- K. R. Smith

Squirrels And More!

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

On the publishing front, the editor for Lonesome Train, the anthology containing my latest short story titled Momma Knows Best, says it is in the final stages of editing and should be available soon. Not soon enough, but soon. It's all relative, I suppose.

For those who are more likely to visit my blog here than find me elsewhere, I wanted to let you know about my Patreon Haiku post for April. This particular post is free for everybody to view and it has cute pictures of squirrels. And a haiku. What more could one possibly want?

Anyway, click on this Patreon link and you'll soon be enjoying this post. Okay, I don't really know if you'll enjoy it, but I'm an optimist.

While you're at it, please consider helping these writers!

Troy Blackford and his family is having a difficult time due to the potentially fatal illness of one of his sons. Help him out if you can. You can also find him on Twitter.

And last, but not least, Terri Deno has a new book of poetry available:  If It Was New York, Summer 2009. Please consider purchasing a copy. Writing is her only means of support, so let's support her writing!

April Is Twice As Nice!

It's officially April, so we have two events starting this month!

Image of quill and pen

First is National Poetry Month.

If you'd like, visit the website and you can get a free poster!

I know a few folks who will be doing a bit of poetry for the occasion. I'm sure Terri Deno will have something out there, or you can a copy of her new book of poetry And check my Patreon site for a free visual haiku (part of my monthly series).  You don't have to be a member of Patreon for this one. It should be available soon. My little poem will be to celebrate Squirrel Week, an annual feature of the Washington Post, and possible the best part of that newspaper. Well, okay, I like the crossword puzzle, too.

There's also Camp Nanowrimo.

I won't be participating, but check out a few writers on the web - it shouldn't be hard to find one who is. Or maybe you should just try it yourself. It's a great way to force yourself into starting that novel you always said you'd write!

Haiku For March 2019

Just a reminder: It’s okay to leave comments!

I've put a new haiku out on my Patreon site (sorry - patrons only). This one celebrates the Full Crow Moon which will appear tonight along with the spring equinox. It's also called the Full Worm Moon, but that wasn't as appealing to me! This is another of my monthly haiku that is on a formatted photo I've taken. Here's a teaser of the full image:

New Anthology Coming

Just a reminder: It's okay to leave comments!

Update: I just checked on this and my poem isn't showing up in the table of contents on Lulu. I've sent an e-mail to the editor to see if anything can be done. If not, well, I guess I'll submit it to another anthology! Thirteen O'clock has others that might be appropriate!

Update #2: Got a message from the editor. My poem missed getting into Welcome to the Dance because of a mix-up, so it will be in the "X VI" anthology (horror/supernatural). These are a series of anthologies for stories that don't fit their themed collections. X V (or X Five) is on its way to the presses, so X VI it is!

I have another (tiny) entry in an upcoming horror anthology being published by Thirteen O'Clock Press. It's a poem this time. It was supposed to be in a collection called Welcome to the Dance, but there weren't enough entries for a stand-alone book so it is being combined with another anthology, The Call, which suffered from similar difficulties.

I don't have a final title yet. I don't know what the cover will look like. I don't know how the anthology will be arranged as it is being combined. But here's a list of the accepted submissions (as provided to me by the editor) in alphabetical order by the author's last name. Well, sort of. Some of the entries have two authors.

The Call

  Brotherly Love by Diane Arrelle
Grant’s Call by Roy C Booth and William Tucker
  London Kind by Gary Budgen
Call of Blood by Michael B Fletcher
His Calling by Michael B Fletcher
Daydream of a Bored Fool by Dave Fragments
Hemorrhoids of the Gods by Ken Goldman*
  Toll Call by Ken Goldman
Rookies Take Point by David M Hoenig
Out of Time by Kevin Holton
  The Message by Jeff Jones
Blood Will Tell by Ken L Jones
Dead Call by Ken L Jones
Far Scarier Than by Ken L Jones
The Nursery by Kevin L Jones
  Ring-Ring by Thomas Malafarina
  Coming Home by RJ Meldrum
Signal To Noise by RJ Meldrum
The Call by Rie Sheridan Rose
You Can’t Lie Forever by Rie Sheridan Rose
The Late Mr. McCall by David Smith
  Called by DJ Tyrer
The Siren Call of Valentina Wentworth by Ken L Jones
The Web Spinner by Matthew Wilson

* Looking forward to reading this one out of morbid curiosity...

Welcome to the Dance

The Web Spinner by Patricia Anabel
  Last Dance by Diane Arrelle
Dancing In The Dark by Edward Cooke
Terpsichorean Titbits by John H Dromey
The Dancing Partner by Joanna Elphick
Cleansing of the Crypt by Michael B Fletcher
Dancing Her Life Away by Michael B Fletcher
  Prom Night by Thomas Malafarina
  The Mask by Chris Marchant
  The Dancer by RJ Meldrum
The Night Of The Dance by RJ Meldrum
The Homecoming Horror by Maria Mitchell
The Black Widow by Marie Mittmann
The Darkest Dance by Marie H Mittmann
Chairman Of The Bored by David Perlmutter
Word Dancer by W K Pomeroy
  The Trigger by James Pyne
  Penitence Ball by CL Raven
Our Night Is Come by Rie Sheridan Rose
Among the Bones by K. R. Smith (poem) (See updates at top of post... there was a mix-up so my poem will be in a different anthology - better late than never!)
Dance With The Devil For Endless Life by Ramona Thompson
A Dance With Death by Wondra Vanian

Now, when I say my poem is a tiny entry, I truly mean that. It has 9 rhymes* using only 76 words all in one sentence. Isn't that enough to make you curious? It's so small it almost didn't make it into the book. The editor approved it, I got the contract, and then it was lost in the shuffle. Fortunately, a quick e-mail got things straightened out. I hope.

FYI, it will probably be out on Lulu soon. Please check out my little poem. And, if you really have to, some of the other author's works might be okay, too...

* Yes, it rhymes—you’ll have to deal with that in your own way. Oddly enough, I’ve had better luck selling rhyming poetry than non-rhyming free-form.

Day 30 - I've Been Quite Wordy

A post-apocalyptic surprise coming soon!

Finally. It's the end of the road. And I need a rest. Desperately.

So, without further ado, here is the last, and quite possibly the least, poem* for National Poetry Day. Published late because I was too tired to format, etc...

The Last Poem

I thought it would be easy.
I didn't know it would make me queasy
Thinking up a new idea each day.

It's also harder to do a rhyme
On time
With something meaningful to say.

But now it's done
And it was fun,
Though I surely need a rest

From writing all this inane stuff
And silly fluff
While making myself a Twitter pest.

So, you won't see me for a while,
And though that may bring a smile,
Rest assured, I shall return.

I will write some brand-new lines
That make you cringe and whine,
And possibly your stomach churn

From puns and silly jokes and such
For which you'll say, "Thank you very much,"
And I will say "You're welcome."

Day 29 - I'm Approaching The Finish Line

A post-apocalyptic surprise coming soon!

It's been a long grinds, trying to come up with a poem* each day. Many of them were short, a few good, a few bad, and most of them silly. Still, it keeps me writing even a little bit while I'm waiting for things to clear up and allow me time to get back into a my real projects.

Remember: there is only one more to endure after this.

Fido

Once upon a midnight dreary while I pondered, eyes all bleary,
Hoping to come up with a quaint and curious poem for National Poetry Month—
While I wondered what was lacking, suddenly there came a yapping,
Also something gently scratching, scratching at my kitchen door.
"Must be that stupid dog again," I muttered, "yapping at my kitchen door—
   Only this an nothing more."

Yeah, I think it was in mid-December,
Although I'm not sure I remember.
Eagerly, I was eating marshmallows; I would have to get some more tomorrow
And I, full of sucrose and not of sorrow, except, perhaps, for the wanting more—
Then checking the price on the name brand I'd gotten—
I'll buy the generic brand, for sure...

And then, my sad, old curtains of uncertain color rustled,
That thrilled me—filled me with terror I'd know too well before.
I'd probably have to fight my way past the little mutt to get to the store,
"It has to be that stupid dog again, yapping at my kitchen door—
The neighbor's stupid dog again," I muttered, "yapping at my kitchen door—
   Only this an nothing more."

Presently, my soul grew stronger until I couldn't stand it any longer,
"Fido, or whatever your name is, quit your yapping at my kitchen door.
I'm busy now, if you don't mind, so I don't have time for being kind."
But still there was that awful scratching and, of course, that fitful yapping
Until, so disturbed was I, I opened wide the kitchen door—
  Darkness there and nothing more.

Then from behind me I heard a rustle, the sound of plastic in a tussle,
And I saw that ADHD Jack Russel, who had sneaked past my opened door,
Licking up my few marshmallows like the hungriest of fellows,
And, so, I picked the little critter up, setting it outside on all fours,
Where once again he took to yapping, all the time outside my door.
  Quoth from me: Never more.

Day 28 - I Hope I Won't Be Late

A post-apocalyptic surprise coming soon!

...in getting this posted. Listening to the Caps game tonight—priorities, you know.

My Dark Friend

The night has a personality,
Character, if you will,
Unique, and alive to those unafraid to listen.

It has a voice,
A distant voice,
That speaks to me in whispers.

Even on a busy street,
Surrounded by crowds and the lights,
I hear it calling from over my shoulder

Bringing comfort,
A protective shroud of darkness,
That puts my mind at ease.

But we are friends,
The night and I,
And most will never understand.

They can neither speak its language,
Nor see its subtle gestures,
Or even sense its presence.

But I can.

BTW - The Caps won.

Day 27 - Til I'm Done, I Ain't Leavin'

A post-apocalyptic surprise coming soon!

And I know many of you wish I was done. "Another stupid poem? Dear God, save us from this freak!"

To which I reply, "It won't hurt a bit. And it will all be over soon enough."

If that doesn't scare you, I don't know what will. Besides, all my poems* aren't stupid. Some fall into the silly category. Still, they do help me to keep writing, and perhaps a few can be salvaged for later rework into something more acceptable.

Perhaps a brief explanation is in order.

My Poetry

My poems are crude,
My poems are scary.
Hardly ever literary.

Sometimes they rhyme,
Sometimes they don't.
Just like this.

But they're all mine
And that's what matters,
Not by Poe or some other mad-hatter.

I write them down,
I write them up,
And... I can't think of anything that makes sense that rhymes with up.

So, here's another poem
For another day,
And that's about all I have to say.

                      Burma-Shave, uh, I mean K.R. Smith
